I can attest to this, my family bought a house about 6 years ago and it lost about 200K in value almost instantly. My dad got laid off a few years later and eventually got a move in a different city so we needed to get out from under the house. The only thing stopping my family from being slammed with 200K in debt was an awesome legal loophole that allowed us to pass off the reduced value of the house as the bank's loss (and our profit) and not having to pay taxes on it because the loophole applied to anyone 55 and older (which my dad qualified for).
