Christianity absorbing pagan rituals as a way to gain followers early on. Same thing that happens with Christmas and how a fat guy in a suit ended up being just as important as a God-Child born two thousand years ago and whose life was written out thirty-something years after his death by guys who never met him. That's how they (Early Christians) created their own identity, by attacking and attempting to convert the Pagans at the time.

Pagans worshiped rodents and eggs?
PS: I am jk... but you people do realize it has less to do with pagan followers and more to do with keeping the kiddies entertained right?

I actually wrote the Pope a letter and asked him about this. This is the response I got:
"You wanna know why? BECAUSE FUCK YOU THAT'S WHY!"

I would assume that commercialization of the holidays would have began rather early (gotta buy me some hand made commemorative Resurrection dish towels), so yeah that likely helped a lot turning it into what it has become.
